More Oldies

Thought I would give you another glimpse into some of the old dishes I have.
I'm not sure if the green glasses are oatmeal glasses or not. My husband seems to think so.
When he was about 12 years old he went to play with a friend. He does not remember what he and Richard did for Richard's Mom. Some job she wanted done and she got these two little boys to do it! Not for money - which was'nt real plentiful back in those days, but because they just wanted to help.
When my husband started home she had packed up these little green glasses (ten) and gave them to him. He probably forgot all about them. One day, after we were married for quite a few years, my mother in law got them out and gave them back to my husband. I have had them in a litlle corner cabinet in my kitchen since we got them.
I have often wander why someone would give a little boy glasses like these unless they were real plentiful at the time and she thought she needed to give him something. Also, how his Mom kept them all those years and not be tempted to use them. I'm not sure of the size but they hold at least 6 oz if not 8 oz. I feel they are juice glasses. If anyone remembers anything like these from oatmeal in the early 1950's - please let me know. I have never been tempted to use them. We must have gotten them in the 1980's.
The pitcher is another collectable. I must have gotten it in the 1990's. It came from my elderly neighbor who passed away in the year 2000. (The same sweet elderly lady who gave me the teaset from occupied Japan that I wrote about earlier.) I'm not sure of the pattern but feel sure it is real old. GuessI just enjoy old things! She and I use to talk about each piece she had. She knew I liked oldies and I think she enjoyed the company. She had no children. We were neighbors for twenty years and there was an age gape between us but I never seem to notice.
I'm glad she gave me several of the things we talked about before she passed away. At the time we talked about them I just admired them - not knowing that she would eventually give them to me. Guess she just wanted someone to appreciate them. I surely have enjoyed displaying the pitcher along with the glasses that were given my husband.

Warm Babies

I just thought I would post another page from the old 1930 scrap book that was given me. The pages are all yellow and brittle but I still enjoy reading it. This poem was written by a black man years ago.
Warm Babies
Note: When a negro preacher with imagination and poetic license sets out to deliver a sermon, especially if there be fire involved, he makes things hot. Keith Preston has caught the spirit of the theme and rendered it in true "Negro" style.
Shadrach, Mesach, Abednego, Walked in the furnace to and 'fro.
Hay foot, straw foot, fro and' to - an' the flame an' the smoke flared up de flue.
Nebuchadnezzar he listen some, and hear 'em talk, an' he say,"How come?"
An' he hear 'em walk, and he say."How so? Dem babies was hawg tied an hour ago!"
Then Shadrach call, in a uppity way, "A little more heat or we ain gwine stay!"
An Meseach bawl, so dat furnace shake: Lanlawd, heat! fo' de good Lawd's sake.
Abednego yell wid a loud "kerchoo -Is you out to freeze us, y' great big Jew?"
Nebuchadnezzear, he rare and ramp, An' call to his janitor, "You big black scamp
Shake dem clinkers an' spen' dat coal! I'll bake dem birds, ef I goes in de hole."
He puts on de draf an' he shuts de door, so the furnace glow and de chimbly roar.
Ol' Nebubuchadnezzar, he smole a smile, "Guess lat'll hold 'em " says he ,"one while."
Then Shadrach, Mesach, Abednego, Walk on de hot coals to an' fro,
An holler out fo' a mite mo' heat - Gulp dem cinders like chicken meat.
Ol' Nebuchadnezzar gives up de fight: He open dat door an' he bow perlite.
He shade his eyes from the glare infernal , an' he say to Abednego, "Step out colonel."
An' he add, "Massa Shadrach, I hopes you all - wont be huffy at me a'tall.
Then Shadrach, Mesach, Abednego, hay foot, straw foot, three in a row
Stepped right smart from dat oven door, Jes' as good as they wuz before,
An' far as Nebchadnezzar could find, Jes' as good as they was behind.

More Antiques

Does anyone know what the little crystal hearts are on the left? They are individual salt containers that were used before my time. They come with little tiny spoons but I can't find the spoons. I have 6 of these little jewels that were given to me about 20 years ago. My neighbor ask me what you used them for and at the time I did not know. So since she was packing up all her Dad's house and moving she told me to take them. At the time I just thought they were cute, but after checking antique shops I found out what they were. I saw some plain ones that were quite expensive. I have no idea what these would be worth.
The dish on the right side came from my husband's grandmother. I don't know it's original use but she use it for a sugar bowl. It was always on her kitchen table as my husband grew up.
So it means a lot to him. I just have it in a pie safe with other antiques. It can be seen because the pie safe is also an antique that his Aunt left him. It had to be restored but has original screen on it. I stripped it down when we got it and the oak was so pretty that all I did was put a sealer on it. Later I will take a picture of the pie safe and post it.
I wonder what in the world to do with some of this stuff that is so sentimemtal to me. Seems younger generations has no appreciation for antique. I'll just enjoy them and the first child or grandchild that shows interest I will give it to them. I had a Real McCoy Cookie Jar that was my mother's when I was young. One day my son came by and told me to take car of it - he wanted it. I picked it up and gave it to him and told him to take care of it! It was a Chef and in perfect shape. He and his wife went to an antique show and saw one just like it. He had to have it and paid 65.00 for it.
Guess I need to go to antique shows and see what some things are worth. I might want to have a flea market! If I wasn't so sentimental I would - but sentiment gets the best of me so I guess I'll just keep washing and dusting each little treasure.

WAITING ON GOD

Yesterday as we were riding in the van with my brother and his wife he was singing a little chorus with much meaning. TEACH ME LORD TO WAIT. "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint. Teach me Lord, teach me Lord to wait."
My thoughts, while he was singing, were: The hardest thing in my Christian life has been to learn how to wait. In a little while he look at my husband and said, "You know that is one of the hardest things to do?" Wait! How many times in a day do we hear that one word?
I knew the scripture by heart but I had to go back this morning and read it from the Bible. I went back a few verses and read in Isaiah 40:28: "Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding." vs.29 "He giveth power to the faint;and to them that have no might he increaseth strength."
It seems we are forever waiting on someone or something. My brother remembered when we were kids. Mother and Dad would go on Friday evening to buy groceries for the week. We children stayed at home except for the baby. Sometimes it got dark before they got home. But we were brave since we had an older brother with us. We knew that when they got home with the groceries that somewhere in a bag -they would have us candy. So really- waiting wasn't too bad because we there was something in it for us.
But what about the times when we have to wait and don't really understand why? The times that we ask the Lord to work on behalf of a cetain situation that is really important to us? Are we willing to wait patiently for God's timing? Patiently? Wherever did that word come from? That means we have to have patience and doesn't the Word say Tribulation worketh patience?
I remember in High School that I thought the Senior year would never come. But as I plodded along with my studies the day finally arrived. I was a High School Graduate!
I also remember when my husband ask me to marry him. That was in March. We set the date for November. We were 300 miles away from each other. So we patiently waited for a letter in the mail each day. I wore a path going to the mailbox to hear just a few words from my future groom. It finally got down to with each letter we could count off the weeks, then the days
and then the news that he would be there the next day. The day finally came that we had waited for. The bride and groom were united in marriage. Was it worth the wait? Oh Yes!I often think that we as the Bride of Christ are waiting for our Groom, the Lord Jesus to come. Will it be worth the wait? A thousand times yes!
In the 1st chapter of Acts Jesus commanded His disciples not to depart out of Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father. After giving them instructions He was taken up in a cloud. Here were these men that had walked and talked every day with Jesus. Now their Leader was gone! They really did not know what was going to happen. Just wait! In waiting pray! Why did they have to wait so long? Because that was their command. But as they prayed I am prone to think that maybe they had some issues with each other that had to be cleared up. Restitution! That's a word we don't hear much anymore.
Maybe fellowship with each other had to be restored, maybe hard feelings -- whatever they did to get in one accord was well worth the price they paid to get there. Can you imagine 120 in the upper room all in one accord? They were there because Jesus gave them instructions to tarry and wait. He promised them power after the Holy Spirit comes. They were as human as we are!
"Lord, will thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? and he said unto them , It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power." They were expecting Jesus to come back and set up his kingdom. But they were to soon learn the meaning of waiting on the Lord.
I find in my own Christian life that it is easier to wait now than it was in the past. Do I like it? No! But I have learned over the years that the Lord has our interest at heart. I have learn to depend on Him to work everything in my life out as He sees best. Is it easy? No! I have to ask the Lord to help me with each new trial. I remember wearing myself out trying to work out my own problems. Can I tell you - I have always made a mess of things when I do?
"Hast thou not heard that the Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? He giveth power to the faint, and to them that hath no might He increaseth strength." He will work out every thing in our life if we will learn to wait on Him.
Teach me Lord, Teach me Lord, to wait!

"RAGGED OLD FLAG" I walked through a county courthouse square On a park bench an old man was sittting there I said "Your courthouse is kind a rundown." He said,"Na! It'll do for our little town." I said, "Your flag pole has leaned a litle bit And that's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it." He said, "Have a seat" and I sat down. "Is this the first time you've been to our little town?" I said, "I think it is." He said,"I don't like to brag But we're kind of proud of that ragged old flag. You see! we got a litle hole in that flag there. When Washington took it across the Delaware And it got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key Sat watchin it writing: Say can you see, And it got a bad rip in New Orleans With Packingham and Jackson tuggin at it's seams. And almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag. But she waved on tho' she got cut with a sword at Chancelorsville. And she got cut agin at Shilo Hill. There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard and Brag. And the south wind blew hard on that old ragged flag. On Flanders Hill in World War 1 She got a big hole from a Bertha gun. She turned blood red by the time it was through She was in Korea and Viet Nam, She went where she was set by her Uncle Sam. She got mistreated in Iran, But got a ticker tape welcome back, home again. In Her own good land She's been abuse She's been burned and dishonored, denied and refused And the government for which She stands Has been scandalized though out the land. And She's getting threadbare for the shape She's in 'Cause She's been through the fire before. And I believe She can take a whole lot more. So we raise Her up every morning, take Her down every night. We don't let Her touch the ground, and fold Her up right. On second thought, I do like to brag. Cause I'm mighty proud of that old ragged flag." I found this in and old scrape book that my Mother gave me. GOD BLESS AMERICA! HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

'TIL THE STORMS PASSES OVER

These are indeed trying times that we live in! Sometimes the way gets dark. Every day for the past few days, in the heat of the day a dark cloud will block out the rays of the sun. It will pass, the sky will lighten up , then later the sky will darken again.
I thought about the dark clouds that come in a Christians life. When dark times come I seem to think of the song 'TILL THE STORM PASSES OVER.
In the dark of the midnight, have I oft hid my face,
While the storms howl above me, and there,s no hiding place
Mid the crash of the thunder, precious Lord, hear my cry
Keep me safe til the storm passes by.
Many times Satan whispers. 'There is no need to try,
For there's no end of sorrow, there's no hope by and by.
But I know thou art with me and tomorow I'll rise
Where the storms never darken the skies.
When the long night has ended, and the storms come no more,
Let me stand in thy presence on that bright peaceful shore,
In that land where the temptest never comes, Lord, may I
Dwell with thee when the storm passes by.
'Til the storms passes over, 'til the thunder sounds no more
'Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand
Keep me safe 'til the storm passes by.
I read where F.B.Meyer wrote: Clouds, as dust, conceal Him, but we must not dwell with those dark and discouraging thoughts as if the clouds were all! God is behind those looming masses, working for us and with us. He is coming to our rescue, showing Himself strong on our behalf. Whenever you face another cloudy day, be aware of the fact that God cannot be far away. What you see is only the dust He is raising in His progress toward you. He is near! Trust Him!
Those puffy clouds may be a great mass to you, equal to the Alps in magnificence, in height, in girth, and in impossibilities. To God, however, the clouds are a particle of dust. Your difficulties, perplexities, and anxieties are very little things to Him. With one movement of His hand He can sweep them all away just as you might remove dust from a table. Can you not trust Him? Your tears move Him, your difficulties are nothing but dust to Him. He is coming to you with majesty! (Unquote)
I thought as a younger person, we have trials. Surely the Lord is trying to mold us. Then as adult hood came and the storms were of a different nature, surely the Lord is trying to mold us.
In raising children and trying to mold their life's and praying that God will lead them in the right direction in life .. surely this was a great responsibility. Then as they began to make choices of their own, the thing that touches and grieves a Mother's heart is when one makes a wrong choice. I'm sure a Dad, also, but it seemed in our home that Dad showed it ia different way. Sure we are grieved, our hearts are torn and sometimes it seems crushed to the limit. Seems all our dreams for that child is at our feet in ashes. But as F.B. Meyer wrote, Isn't that only a particle of dust? Can we trust God in these times?
May I say that we are going through a time of heartache with a grown child. But no matter what wrong choices they make: We still love. That love will never go away even if a child choses to distance himself from you. I ask myself what is God trying to teach us through all
trying dark cloudy days? Discouraged? No! We can't afford to be.
My desire is that whatever we go through in life that we may shine forth as overcomers because of Him. I feel that God wants to turn heartaches and sorrows into service for Him. I feel He wants us to draw closer to Him when these times comes.
Herbert Lockyer writes: "The dramatic Book of Job declares that he patriach's sufferings were not a token of God's judgment upon him for wickedness; they are rather an evidence of God's confidence in him for his integrity. Job portrays why the Godly should suffer. It is because trial is a trust from the Giver of every good and perfect gift to be borne for His glory.
There seem to be a majesty in his sufferings and cloudy days also. But Job came forth as gold.
And said "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him."
In these last days before the Lord comes the devil is making an all out attack on Christian families. We must stick together and bear one another's burdens. A very special family in our church is facing some mighty dark days. I can't say that I know all they are going through, but
what is my duty as a child of God? To help them bear that burden! To pray and let them know they are loved. That black cloud that they are under can become the brightest cloud. I know they will come out victorious because they know where their help comes from. But right now it seems the sun will never shine again. Will you pray for this family? Our heart goes out to them and I'm sure yours would too if you knew the circumstances. But God knows!
Job cried out"Oh, that I might know where to find Him, that I might come to His seat." The more he cried out, the more the darkness intensified in the clouds that hung over Him. Job could not find God in those awful clouds. he went forward, backward, to the right and to the left, but could not find Him. But Job in all his distress said: "But He knoweth the way that I take: When He hath tried me I shall come forth as gold." Job 23:10
I am made to realiaze more and more that God knows exactly where His children are. He knows exactly when and how to help us. Even in the cloud . Just hang on and the storm will pass over!
He has proven this to be many times. He wants our trust!
